Our July 2020 conference in Atlanta is now about four months away. We want to assure the members that the Society for Text and Discourse’s leadership is closely monitoring the events concerning COVID-19 (novel coronavirus). The health and safety of conference participants are of primary concern. We also recognize that there is considerable uncertainty regarding whether travel restrictions will extend into the summer, which will understandably affect decisions to make travel plans.
At the same time, we feel that it is premature to make any decisions about the conference at this juncture. We are mindful of the fact that there is considerable international travel associated with the conference and will be evaluating the situation closely in the coming months. As of now, we are planning to hold the conference. If attendees plan to buy plane tickets, we strongly encourage you to buy refundable tickets. If there are travel restrictions for our international colleagues, please know that we will refund your conference fee minus the credit card procession fee. Finally, if we do have to cancel the physical meeting, we will be exploring options of holding a remote conference, as is being done with other societies. We will continue to communicate with you as the conference approaches should any changes in local circumstances occur.
