Three Assistant Professor positions (2 Tenure Track; 1 position for 4 years) in
Communication and Cognition
The Department of Communication and Information Sciences is looking for enthusiastic colleagues for the position of Assistant Professor in the field of Communication and Cognition.
The candidate is expected to initiate and conduct fundamental and applied research in the Tilburg center for Cognition and Communication (TiCC), one of the five centers of excellence at Tilburg University. TiCC combines two research programs: Creative Computing (CC), including research in Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, and Intelligent Systems, and Language, Communication and Cognition (LCC), including research in Communication and Discourse Studies. The unique combination of these two research programs enables TiCC to work on research projects in which computer-based techniques of modeling and processing (big) data are combined with experimentally elicited human data.
Furthermore, the candidate contributes (both in terms of teaching and organization) to one of the leading programs in the Netherlands in Communication and Information Sciences (CIS), in particular in the tracks Text and Communication, Communication Design, and Data Journalism. The tracks focus on human communication as a multimodal phenomenon, with a strong emphasis on the interplay between textual, auditory and visual modalities; it explores interactive and non-interactive forms of communication (human-human, human-machine, computer-mediated).
The position calls for a young ambitious scientist with a strong research and teaching background, and a completed PhD in an area relevant to the tracks mentioned, including but not limited to Communication and Information Sciences, Linguistics, Discourse Studies, Cognitive Science, Cognitive or Social Psychology. In particular, we invite candidates to apply with an interest in interaction and dialogue, non-verbal communication, visual communication, text generation, or multimodal discourse.
The successful candidate
- Has a PhD in a relevant discipline and has published in top internationaljournals or proceedings
- Has a strong record in developing and teaching Bachelor and (Research) Master courses, and experience with supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.
- Has the ability to acquire external funding for research.
- Has a promising profile in academic management.
- Has the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and department.
- Has acquired (or is willing to acquire) the Basic Teaching Qualification.
- Is able (or willing to learn) to communicate in Dutch.
Terms of employment
The positions will be ranked in the Dutch university job ranking system (UFO) as assistant professor (“universitair docent”). The starting gross salary for a full-time appointment is (minimally) € 3.324,- in scale 11 up to (maximally) €4.551,- gross per month per month (max € 63.500,- all in per year). For the Tenure Track positions a career development to salary scale 12 is possible (maximal €72.000 gross per year all in).
Positions are full time, with tasks divided between teaching/management (65%) and research (35%). A part-time position of 80% is negotiable.
The start of the employment is negotiable, preferably January 1, 2016.
- Successful Tenure Track candidates first receive a contract of 1 year, after the first positive evaluation an extension of 3 years, after the second positive evaluation a permanent contract.
- Successful 4-year term candidates receive first a contract of 1 year, after a positive evaluation an extension of 3 years.
Tilburg University is rated among the top of Dutch employers and has excellent terms of employment. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply for such an allowance on their behalf.
