Welcome to the 2019 ST&D conference! This page will be updated up until the conference with details about the conference venue, lodging, special programming, local dining (at many price points), leisure options, etc.

Most conference sessions will be held in The New School’s University Center (UC), at 63 Fifth Ave between 13th and 14th Streets in Greenwich Village (entrance at Fifth and 13th).

However, some conference events (Poster Sessions and Receptions, the ST&D Business meeting and Closing Reception) will be held in Wollman Hall, located in the Eugene Lang Building (room B500) at 65 West 11th Street.

Specific room locations for all events are available in the 2019 ST&D online program. A campus map of The New School is also available for reference.

At a few points during the conference, attendees will have a chance to join curated tours of high points in The New School’s remarkable on-campus art collection, which includes the legendary 1931 Orozco murals, and commissioned pieces by artists like Kara Walker, Sol LeWitt, and Glenn Ligon.

If you are interested in extending your stay in NYC before or after the conference, please feel free to contact the hotels directly (see links for contact information) to see if they can accommodate you and extend the special rates. New York of course has many other lodging options at various price points, from couch surfing with friends to very high end hotels. If you are considering an option that isn’t right near The New School, keep in mind that many major subway lines converge nearby, which means that options in Manhattan and Brooklyn could also be relatively convenient. Please feel free to email local host Michael Schober if you are looking for a realistic take on travel time and convenience for alternative lodging locations.

The neighborhoods near The New School have some of the best eating and drinking in New York City, at many different price points.

To assist the attendees of ST&D 2019, we are pleased to provide the ST&D 2019 – NYC Dining and Drinks Guide, based on recommendations from faculty and students of the New School.

New York of course has a huge range of options! One tip: If there’s a show, performance or exhibit you definitely want to be sure to see, it’s not too early to check about getting your tickets now (particularly for ultra-popular shows)—and it’s always worth searching for discounts if they exist. You can also take your chances while here, including for same-day TKTS and rush/lottery tickets.

For many iconic New York museums and landmarks, buying your tickets beforehand online (even the night before) can allow you to bypass terrible summer lines and guarantee admission. Again, it’s always worth searching for a discount in case there is one!
