We are proud to invite you to The Future of Literacy in Illinois Policy Breakfast on Wednesday, April 15, an event bringing together policymakers, foundation officers, researchers and educators for presentations and discussion about ways to improve literacy policy in Illinois and around the nation. Sponsored by the University of Illinois at Chicago Center for Literacy and Research on Urban Education Policy Initiative, the event will be organized around three presentations on critical areas of literacy policy. Policy briefs detailing the information from the presentations will be available at the event. An opening address will be given by UIC College of Education Dean Alfred Tatum, an expert in the literacy development of African American males. The presentations following are: • Rebecca Woodard — Moving Beyond Compliance: Implementing the Common Core Standards in Literacy (co-author, Sonja Kline, Illinois State University). • Nathan Phillips — Access, Equity, and Empowerment: Supporting Digital Literacies for All Learners (co-author, Michael Manderino, Northern Illinois University). • William Teale — Early Childhood Literacy: Policy for the Coming Decade (co-authors, Maureen Meehan, Melanie Walski, Emily Hoffman, Colleen Whittingham, University of Illinois at Chicago; and Anna Colaner, Illinois Governor’s Office of Early Childhood).
